The Panavia Tornado was a joint effort between the UK, West Germany and Italy to produce a two-seat, dual-engine aircraft with variable-sweep wings. The Tornado took its maiden flight on August 14, 1974 with the first aircraft being delivered to the German Air Force on July 27, 1979. There are three main variants of the Tornado, the IDS (interdictor/strike), ECR (electronic combat/reconnaissance) and ADV (air defense variant) interceptor. By the end of production in 1998 there had been 992 aircraft of all versions built of which 745 were IDS variants. Primary Role: Light Bomber.
The two-seat Tornado entered service with the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare) in the early 1980s. In the Aeronautica Militare structure the group is called 154° Gruppo CBOC/CRO (154th All-weather Fighter-Bomber/All-weather Reconnaissance Fighter Squadron). The first frontline squadron to be equipped with the Tornado was the 154° Gruppo, at Ghedi, under the 6° Stormo “Diavoli Rossi” (‘Red Devils’). The 154° Gruppo reached full strength in 1984 when they had received all 18 aircraft and after extreme training the 154° achieved full combat readiness by October 1985.
