The Eurofighter Typhoon is a European twin-engine, canard delta wing, multirole fighter. The Typhoon was designed originally as an air superiority fighter and is manufactured by a consortium of Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo that conducts the majority of the project through a joint holding company, Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH. The NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency, representing the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain manages the project and is the prime customer. Primary Role: Multirole Fighter, Air Superiority Fighter.
The development of the Eurofighter began in 1983 with the prototype maiden flight of the Eurofighter taking place on March 27, 1994. The first fully equipped Tranche 2 Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA7) took to the skies on January 16, 2008. In September 2012 No. 1 (F) Squadron reformed at RAF Leuchars and equipped with the new Eurofighter Typhoon. In September 2014 the squadron moved operations to RAF Lossiemouth to join No. 6 Squadron, XV (R) Squadron, “D” Flight, No. 202 Squadron (SAR) and No. 5 Force Protection Wing. No. 1 (F) Squadron has the distinction of being the first fly VTOL aircraft. In July 2020 the main runway at RAF Lossiemouth was being resurfaced so the Typhoons were to move to Kinloss Barracks and the QRA jets to deploy to Leuchars.
