The Mikoyan MiG-29 NATO reporting name: Fulcrum, is a twin-engine jet fighter aircraft designed in the Soviet Union. Developed by the Mikoyan design bureau as an air superiority fighter during the 1970s, the MiG-29, along with the larger Sukhoi Su-27, was developed to counter new U.S. fighters such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle and the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. The MiG-29 entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1982. Primary Role: Air Superiority Fighter, Multirole Fighter.

In 1989 the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) contracted to purchase 20 MiG-29; 14 MiG-29A and 6 Mig-29UB for the 11th TFS. The newly created Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Air Force was to receive 16 MiG-21s from East Germany but that didnÆt materialize so an additional 11 MiG-29As were purchased. In January 1991 as a result of Operation Desert Storm 144 Iraqi aircraft fled to Iran of which 4 were MiG-29As. MiG-29 3-6133 of the Iraqi 6th Squadron was one of the MiGs and later became property of the IRIAF.
