The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is a retired American single-seat, twin-engine stealth attack aircraft that was developed by Lockheed's secretive Skunk Works division and operated by the United States Air Force (USAF). It was the first operational aircraft to be designed around stealth technology. The F-117 was based on the Have Blue technology demonstrator. The Nighthawk's maiden flight took place in 1981 at Groom Lake, Nevada, and the aircraft achieved initial operating capability status in 1983. The aircraft was shrouded in secrecy until it was revealed to the public in 1988. Of the 64 F-117s built, 59 were production versions, with the other five being prototypes. Primary Role: Stealth Attack Aircraft.
The second Nighthawk produced was YF-117A 79-10781 and assigned to the 410th Flight Test Squadron ˘Baja Scorpions and named Scorpion 2. In 1991 the first 2 aircraft of five full-scale development aircraft (FSD), 79-10780 and 79-10781 were to be retired early and displayed. In order to do this 79-10781 had to be stripped of its highly classified toxic radar absorbent coating. It was blasted with baking soda in a special facility so the bare aluminum body had ˘Toxic Waste÷ painted on the side because it was considered bad luck for an aircraft not to have a name.
