The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, twin-tail, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program after the collapse of the F-111B project. The F-14 was the first of the American Teen Series fighters, which were designed incorporating air combat experience against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War. Primary Role: Interceptor, Air Superiority, And Multirole Fighter.
In 1988 flying F-14A 162705 c/n 551 Captain Dale ôSnortö Snodgrass performed his (in)famous super low banana pass off the port side of the USS America while at sea. Snodgrass was the high-time F-14 pilot with over 4,800 hours flying the F-14. Snodgrass was a member of VF-33 Starfighters, formerly the Tarsiers, a small South Asian mammal. Between December 28, 1990 and April 18, 1991 VF-33 was deploy onboard USS America in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Storm. Unfortunately Snodgrass died in 2021 in an air show crash.
