The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, twin-tail, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program after the collapse of the F-111B project. The F-14 was the first of the American Teen Series fighters, which were designed incorporating air combat experience against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War. Primary Role: Interceptor, Air Superiority, And Multirole Fighter.
VF-84 was established on July 1, 1955 as VF-86 but changed to VF-84. This was the third unit to be named VF-84 and they assumed the nickname ôJolly Rogersö. F-14A 160408 c/n 264 made an appearance in the movie ôExecutive Decisionö as Vic 201. In 1993 and assigned to VF-84 160408 deployed with the USS Theodore Roosevelt on March 11, 1993 until September 8 for a cruise to the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red Sea. This would be their last on USS Theodore Roosevelt as they were disestablished on October 1, 1995.
