The Northrop Grumman (formerly Grumman) EA-6B Prowler is a twin-engine, four-seat, mid-wing electronic-warfare aircraft derived from the A-6 Intruder airframe. The EA-6A was the initial electronic warfare version of the A-6 used by the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy. Development on the more advanced EA-6B began in 1966. An EA-6B aircrew consists of one pilot and three Electronic Countermeasures Officers, though it is not uncommon for only two ECMOs to be used on missions. It is capable of carrying and firing anti-radiation missiles (ARMs), such as the AGM-88 HARM. Primary Role: Electronic Warfare/Attack Aircraft.
Based on the A-6 Intruder the Northrop Grumman (formerly Grumman) EA-6B Prowler primary mission is to support strike aircraft and ground forces by interrupting enemy electronics and gathering tactical intelligence. The aircraft carries 4-crew and is in service with the USN and USMC. The first USN EA-6B was retired on June 10, 2011 and the last carrier deployment by an EA-6B took place on November 14, 2014. The USN will replace the EA-6B with the Boeing EA-18G Growler. The USMC will continue using the EA-6B until 2019.
On October 3, 2006 VAQ-140 “Patriots” and their EA-6Bs made its first of five deployments onboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. On June 20, 2012 the “Patriots” began their last deployment on the USS DDE with the EA-6B. VAQ-140 returned home to NAS Whidbey Island and began the process of retiring the Prowler for the new EA-18G Growler. The EA-6B Prowler joined the fleet in 1971 with VAQ-140 beginning to fly the EA-6B in 1985. Prowler 163521 was sent to AMARC in 2015.
