The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole combat aircraft that is intended to perform both air superiority and strike missions. It is also able to provide electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. Lockheed Martin is the prime F-35 contractor, with principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The aircraft has three main variants: the conventional takeoff and landing F-35A (CTOL), the short take-off and vertical-landing F-35B (STOVL), and the carrier-based F-35C (CV/CATOBAR). Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II 32-01/MM7332 completed its maiden flight on September 7, 2015 and is the first Italian Air Force F-35 and the first F-35 to be assembled outside the U.S.A.. This aircraft is also the first F-35 assigned to 32 Stormo (Squadron). The assembly took place at the FACO (Final Assembly & Check Out) facility in Cameri. On February 5, 2016 F-35A 32-01/MM7332 left Cameri for an eleven hour flight with seven air-refuels to reach NAS Patuxent River, Maryland and later on to Luke AFB for pilot training.
