The General Dynamics / Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta. Primary Role: Multirole fighter, Air Superiority Fighter.
The Greek Government had considered purchasing the Eurofighter Typhoon but in 2005 opted to purchase the F-16. Under the Peace Xenia IV agreement 20 new Block 52 F-16Cs and 10 Block 52 F-16Ds would be delivered between 2009 and 2010. F-16C 06-0002 was the second C variant to be delivered to the 336 Sq “Olympos” of 116 CW, the oldest and most famous squadron in Greece. The 336th began receiving their F-16s in 2014 making them the last HAF squadron to fly the A-7 Corsair.
