The General Dynamics / Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta. Primary Role: Multirole fighter, Air Superiority Fighter.
In the summer of 1979 the RNLAF received their first F-16 wearing standard operational colors and displayed it to the public on September 15th. In 1983 the first special paint scheme was added to a 322 Squadron F-16. In 2009 J-015 replaced J-055 as the Demo aircraft and was adorned with the ôOrange Lionö scheme representing the Coat of Arms of the Dutch Royal Family. The 2007 through 2009 demo seasons aircrafts were piloted by Flt Lt Ralph "Sheik" Aarts. J-015 was received by the RNLAF in August 1991.
