The General Dynamics / Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta. Primary Role: Multirole fighter, Air Superiority Fighter.
On August 4, 2017 the 8th Fighter Squadron was re-activated after 6 years of inactivation. The ceremony took place at Holloman AFB, New Mexico and the 8th FS will join the 311th and 314th FSs as part of the 54th FG under the control of the 56th FW. There will be more than 40 F-16s based here. These squadronĘs duties will be to qualify new and former F-16 pilots. F-16C 88-0454 was completed in late 1989 and spent time with 5 squadrons before being assigned to the 8th FS as their flagship.
