The General Dynamics / Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta. Primary Role: Multirole fighter, Air Superiority Fighter.
The Belgian Air Force 349 Squadron was formed in 1942 as part of the Free Belgian Forces assigned to the RAF. During D-Day and throughout the invasion of Normandy the 349th carried out beachhead patrols and escorted bombers. In 1946 the 349th detached from the RAF and moved back to Belgium. To mark the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, F-16AM FA-124 GE-S U.S. that was received by the BAF in October 1990 was given a special paint scheme to commemorate the event. Another F-16AM from 350 Squadron also received a special scheme.
