The General Dynamics / Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta. Primary Role: Multirole fighter, Air Superiority Fighter.
In August 2003 F-16D Block 52 #99-1535 went to Edwards AFB 416 FLTS test center. In August of 2004 it was one of 16 F-16D Block 52 delivered to the HAF under Peace Xenia III and assigned to 343 Mira (Squadron) "Star (Asteri)" serial #601. On March 3rd 2003 the 340th Fighter Bomber Squadron was reformed as the 340 Mira "Fox (Aleppou)" (Squadron) with the new F-16 Block 52 aircraft. In 2009 #601 was transferred to 340 Mira/115 CW(Fighter Wing) at Souda AB, on Crete.
