The General Dynamics / Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta. Primary Role: Multirole fighter, Air Superiority Fighter.
The 480th FS ôWarhawksö was activated in 1957 as 480th FBS. From 1966 until 1971 the 480th F-4C Phantom IIs took part in the Vietnam War and were deactivated in 1971. In 1976 the ôWarhawksö were reactivated as part of the 52nd TFW at Spangdahlem AB eventually becoming a ôWild Weaselö unit equipped with F-4Gs. In March 1987 the 480th began to receive the F-16C but deactivated in 1994 only to rise again in 2010 as a ôWild Weaselö squadron. In 2020 F-16C 96-0080 was painted with a ôHave Glass VÆ special coating to reduce the aircraft radar cross-section.
