The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine, supersonic, all-weather, carrier-capable, multirole combat jet, designed as both a fighter and attack aircraft (hence the F/A designation). Designed by McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing) and Northrop (now part of Northrop Grumman), the F/A-18 was designed to be a highly versatile aircraft due to its avionics, cockpit displays, and excellent aerodynamic characteristics, with the ability to carry a wide variety of weapons. The aircraft can perform fighter escort, fleet air defense, suppression of enemy air defenses, air interdiction, close air support, and aerial reconnaissance. Primary Role: Multirole Fighter.
ALA 12 wing has been based at Torrejon AB since 1959 and since 1989 the unit has been equipped with F/18A/B Hornets. Between October 17 and 30th 2020 the unit took part in “Exercise Sky 2020” hosted by ALA 46 at Gando AB on the Canary Islands. This exercise is similar to others and is meant to increase operational readiness and improve intra unit efficiency. One of ALA 12’s aircraft that took part was 12-09/C15-51 serial 0781/A567.
