The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine, supersonic, all-weather, carrier-capable, multirole combat jet, designed as both a fighter and attack aircraft (hence the F/A designation). Designed by McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing) and Northrop (now part of Northrop Grumman), the F/A-18 was designed to be a highly versatile aircraft due to its avionics, cockpit displays, and excellent aerodynamic characteristics, with the ability to carry a wide variety of weapons. The aircraft can perform fighter escort, fleet air defense, suppression of enemy air defenses, air interdiction, close air support, and aerial reconnaissance. Primary Role: Multirole Fighter.
In the fall of 2010 the VFA-195 ôDambustersö began to convert to the new F/A-18E Super Hornet. VFA-195 became the first unit to fully equip with the F/A-18E. The callsign for VFA-195 for the CAG aircraft NF400 1648899 is ôChippyö so the name ôChippy Hoö was a natural, similar to ôTally Hoö. There have been 3 "Chippy Ho" marked F-18C's, Bu. No's 163758, 164899 and 164905. VFA-195 became the ôDambustersö because they took part in busting dams in the Korean War.
