The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy by McDonnell Aircraft. It first entered service in 1961 with the Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it was also adopted by the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force, and by the mid-1960s had become a major part of their air arms. Primary Role: Interceptor, Fighter-Bomber.
VF-143 “Pukin’ Dogs” adopted their insignia in 1953. One of several stories goes that the squadron commander’s wife said the insignia reminded her of a pukin’ dog which the pilots liked so the named was born. The second unit to be named VF-143 “Pukin’ Dogs” came about on June 20, 1962 and was equipped with F4H-1 Phantom II (later re-designated F-4B Phantom II). F-4B 151444 was one of the B variants that were upgraded to N’s and joined the USN in 1973.
