The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy by McDonnell Aircraft. It first entered service in 1961 with the Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it was also adopted by the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force, and by the mid-1960s had become a major part of their air arms. Primary Role: Interceptor, Fighter-Bomber.
On June 29, 2013 a ceremony was held at Wittmund AB, Germany to say farewell to the last F-4 Phantom II in the Luftwaffe. The aircraft had a special paint scheme called ôFirst In û Last Outö along with ôPhantom Pharewellö emblazoned along the fuselage sides. F-4F 37+01 serial 72-1111 took its maiden flight on May 18, 1973 and thereby becoming GermanyÆs first and last F-4. This celebration marked 40 years of Phantom II service with the Luftwaffe that operated 175 of these aircraft and in which more than 1,000 pilots had flown.
