MAY 2013 RELEASE: Westland Puma HC1. The Puma HC1 is a twin engine medium sized transport and utility helicopter. Used by the RAF since the late 1960s, the Puma has proven itself to be a capable and reliable machine. Undergoing only limited upgrades throughout their service, only now are serious modifications being made to modernise the Puma fleet. Like many Pumas, XW214 served with the RAF in Northern Ireland, operating as a transport helicopter throughout the region during the start of the troubles. The Puma proved to be an invaluable machine, able to carry large loads and survive the sporadic small arms fire that occasionally greeted British forces. XW214 suffered major damage when it had an altercation with a hanger door en-route to a photo shoot with Airfix for the unveiling of their new 1:72 Puma model kit in March 1973. Ending up on its side and damaging a number of cars, another Puma had to be hastily repainted to take part in the unveiling.

MAY 2013 RELEASE: Avro Lancaster - Johnny Walker Throughout the Second World War the Lancaster was involved in a number of daring and historic raids. From the famous breaching of the dams during Operation Chastise to the later battles over Berlin and Hamburg, the Lancaster was at the forefront of many Allied bombing campaigns. The Lancaster was also instrumental to the sinking of the Tirpitz which, at the time, was the pride of the German Navy. Towards the end of the war the Tirpitz was hiding in a Norwegian fjord, safe from the Royal Navy, but vulnerable to attack from the RAF. On the 12th November 1944 the RAF attacked her for the final time. Codenamed Operation Catechism, the raid consisted of 31 Lancasters from 9 and 617 Squadrons armed with the 12,000lb Tallboy bomb. Despite the battleship using its huge 38cm guns to try and break up the bomber formation, the ship was very vulnerable and was hit by two bombs. The Tallboy from W4964 penetrated near the aircraft catapult, exploded and created a large hole in the ship's side and bottom. Shortly afterwards Tirpitz capsized, burying her superstructure into the mud. Lancaster W4964 completed a total of 102 missions, with the historic Tirpitz raid occurring on her 100th sortie.. Space Shuttle (Discovery) w/Crawler Transporter. Dragon's space models are getting more and more exciting for modelers. This is demonstrated by the newest 1/400 scale item – the Space Shuttle Discovery mounted on a massive Crawler-Transporter. The idea behind this enormous vehicle was to transfer space rockets and Space Shuttles from NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to the launch complex at the Kennedy Space Center, a distance of some 5.6km. Two such vehicles were produced, and they were the world’s largest tracked vehicles when built. The Transporter-Crawler measures 40m long, 35m wide and 7.9m high. Its weight comes in at a staggering 2,721 tonnes! Space vehicles are carried aboard the Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP). With a maximum velocity of 1.6km/h and driving team of nearly 30 people. Built to 1/400 scale, the entire assembly of the Shuttle Discovery (with attached External Tank and two Solid Rocket Boosters) plus the MLP and Tractor-Crawler are produced in minute detail. Fine details such as the track links on the four tractors are all perfectly replicated. Even areas that are hidden (e.g. the inside surface of the MLP) are all fully furnished and painted. Discovery had the honor of conducting more flights than any other Shuttle – 39 missions spread over 27 years – and this astonishing Space Collection model from Dragon Wings is the perfect way to commemorate its accomplishments.

VK.45.02(P)V, Germany 1945. Dr. Porsche was an important figure in terms of German armored fighting vehicle development during WWII. Unfortunately, not all his ideas met with success, with the VK4501(P) being a prime example. After its failure, he nevertheless designed an updated version known as the VK.45.02(P). He actually proposed five different versions, with four different types of engine and both forward- and rear-mounted turrets. The heavy tank turret was designed by Krupp to mount an 8.8cm KwK43 L/71 gun, and it featured a rounded front for better ballistic qualities. Production of the VK.45.02(P) was authorized in April 1942 and 200 vehicles were to be produced. Again, however, Dr. Porsche was stymied by a too ambitious automotive design, as the tank’s 10-cylinder engine was unproven and complicated. In November 1942 the whole contract was rescinded and the 57-ton VK.45.02(P) was consigned to the fate of being another ‘paper panzer’!
