Built by Rockwell International, the four-engine supersonic bomber is capable of speeds of Mach 1.25. This important US Air Force (USAF) asset also features variable-sweep wings. The “Bone” entered USAF service in 1986, with 100 aircraft rolling off the production line up till the final one in 1988. Dragon Warbirds’ newest 1/400 scale die-cast model is equally impressive. It’s finished in the markings of the 28th Bomb Wing (28 BW), a formation based at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. 28 BW is one of only two B-1B strategic bomber wings in the USAF, the other being 7 BW. The plane stands out with its two-tone green camouflage scheme, the first time Warbirds has offered a B-1B in these colors. Meanwhile, an emblem and the name, Pride of South Dakota, is painted on the fuselage sides. The wings of the highly accurate bomber model are positioned in their unswept position, giving this exciting item yet another unique flourish.

The B-1 Lancer bomber is the US Air Force’s only serving variable-sweep wing aircraft. The futuristic design was conceived to create a long-range, low-level, supersonic penetrator bomber that could deliver nuclear weapons. Built by Rockwell, the B-1B Lancer appeared in 1986, and it has since been converted to carry out conventional bomber missions. Today a total of 67 “Bones” (the name is taken from its designation B-One) remain in service with the USAF. The new Dragon Warbirds model depicts an aircraft from the official Lancer Test Program. As such, it is resplendent in a white coat of paint and with the appropriate test program markings, including the colorful livery on the tail. Bell X-1E, Test Flight, Contains 2 replicas. The famous Bell X-1 was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight. Its development started in 1945, and it was inspired by the shape of a Browning .50-cal machine gun round. Indeed, the Bell X-1 was essentially a bullet with wings, propelled by a four-chamber rocket engine. The first supersonic test flight occurred on 14 October 1947. After two Bell X-1 craft were destroyed by separate explosions in 1951, X-1E (with serial number 46-063) was reconstructed from X-1-2. Major modifications specific to the X-1E were a turbopump fuel feed system, a super-thin wing and a “knife-edge” cockpit windscreen. The X-1E performed its maiden flight on 15 December 1955 with test pilot Joe Walker at the controls. By the time the craft completed its 26th and final flight it had attained a top speed of Mach 2.21, which equates to 2,704km/h! Warbirds has added the X-1E to its 1/144 scale range of collectible aircraft. Dragon has released X-1 models before, but this model depicts the X-1E on its test flight in December 1955. Furthermore, there isn’t just one aircraft, but the set offers two complete models. One is a regular depiction of the X-1E while the other features Dragon’s exciting concept of a transparent fuselage that allows viewing of the experimental plane’s internal configuration. The two X-1Es can sit side by side on the sleek display stand that comes with the set. In this scale these two planes are not large, but they do reveal all about the Bell X-1E!

C-130K Hercules C.3, 47 Squadron RAF. For more than 50 years, the American C-130 Hercules has proved an enormous success story for its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin. First produced in 1956, the C-130 is a turboprop-powered tactical transport aircraft able to land on and take off from unprepared airstrips. This aircraft, which has been modified continuously throughout its lifetime, is in service with more than 60 countries. One variant is the C-130K, a version built for export to the United Kingdom. The original C-130K of the Royal Air Force (where it’s known as the Hercules C.1) is the equivalent of the C-130E. However, the British later altered their C.1 aircraft by adding an 80-inch plug in the fuselage to increase its cargo volume by 37%. This stretched C-130K version was known as the C.3. In British service, the C-130K performs countless missions such as troop and cargo transport, medical evacuation and airborne assault. The Warbirds range from Dragon has created an all-new die-cast model of the long-body C-130K serving with the RAF. As the first C-130K in the collection, the model makes use of brand new toolings. Attached to the new fuselage is an aerial refueling probe, a device that extends the original aircraft’s range to more than 4,000 nautical miles. With more than 2,300 aircraft manufactured to date, the C-130 Hercules has the longest ever continuous production run for a military aircraft. And now collectors can have their very own RAF version of this workhorse too!

C-5M Super Galaxy, 418th Flight Test Squadron 436th Airlift Wing. The C-5 Galaxy, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is a well-known American military transport aircraft. In production since 1969, the C-5 was designed to carry oversize cargo over intercontinental distances for the US Air Force (USAF). However, technology constantly moves on, and in 1998 work began on modernizing the original C-5 Galaxy. The result was the C-5M Super Galaxy, an aircraft that is to serve on until 2040 and beyond. Key improvements include new engines under the Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program (RERP), and updated avionics under the Avionics Modernization Program (AMP). The latter included new flat-panel displays, improved navigation and communications equipment, and an autopilot. The new power plants are General Electric CF6-80C2 engines with associated auxiliary power units, with these engines producing 22% more thrust than their predecessors. A C-5M is an aircraft that has undergone both these upgrade programs, with the first specimen flying in June 2006. A total of 52 aircraft will be modernized, comprising 49 C-5Bs, two C-5Cs and a solitary C-5A. Dragon Warbirds has produced the original C-5 in model form before, but now comes the C-5M Super Galaxy for the first time. The model depicts a test aircraft that has a special nose containing flight-testing equipment. Detail is finely rendered, and the aircraft is made exactly to the correct scale dimensions. Naturally, the die-cast model features the required new GE engines that were fitted to the C-5M. This aircraft, with more power and greater efficiency, is now airborne in the Warbirds range from Dragon!

On 8 May, facing heavy and fierce fighter opposition, he again displayed extraordinary skill as an airman and the aggressive spirit of a fighter in repeated and effectively executed counterattacks against a superior number of enemy planes in which 3 enemy aircraft were destroyed. Though seriously wounded in this engagement, Lt. (j.g.) Hall, maintaining the fearless and indomitable tactics pursued throughout these actions, succeeded in landing his plane safe. British Eagle, Douglas C-54E Skymaster 1/200 Die Cast Model. WWII in Europe had only ended a few months earlier when Overseas Airlines introduced the first commercial North Atlantic DC-4 service. Another first took place on March 7, 1946 when American Airlines introduced U.S. DC-4 domestic service between New York and Los Angeles. During the late 1940s and early 1950s the DC-4 and converted C-54s carried more passengers than any other four-engine transport. Amazingly many of these aircraft are still operating more than 60 years after they were first manufactured. British Eagle International Airlines was an independent that was in operation from 1948 to 1968. It started out as Eagle Aviation and evolved into British Eagle in 1963. In 1964 the airline took over Starways Airlines and their three DC-4s as well as various other types. Along with it came the schedule services and tours contracts. Not long after this British Eagle started to become non-profitable and in 1968 they liquidated their assets. G-ASPN started out with the USAAF as a C-54A and had about 12 different owners over its life time. The last registration for the aircraft was 9Q-CWP owned by Groupe Litho Moboti Aviation (GLM Aviation). In 1991 it was written off in Kinshasa Zaire after a crash due to engine failure with no fatalities.

US Navy VF-84 F-14A Tomcat ""Black Bunny"" (Cockpit open). A completely black painted, also called “Vandy One” F-14A, with which the test team VX-4 back then went public, caused a furor in 1990. It flew the “Black Bunny” on the tail unit, the logo of Playboy magazine as the VX-4 squadron’s emblem, which was erased from the airplanes after the so-called “Tailhook scandal” at the beginning of the 90s. The reason being to improve the Navy’s image after an incident in 1991, in which US Navy pilots sexually harassed female guests after excessive alcohol intake. The “Vandy One” model has been approved to carry the “Black Bunny” and will be released in two variants with the item number 550239 for the closed cockpit and 550314, in a limited edition of 1,000 items, for the open cockpit version. As such, it cuts a very fine figure on a diorama with the commensurate Herpa accessories.

US Air Force F/A-22A Raptor. In 1986, Lockheed and Northrop accepted a bid to build a prototype each for a USAF contract, resulting in the YF-22 and the YF- 23. Lockheed won the competition with the F-22. At the end of 2002, the specifications had once again been extended – the interceptor was to also become an attack aircraft, and was then named F/A-22 (Fighter / Attack). Its serial production is imminent, with Boeing as a new partner manufacturing the wings and the tails.

US Marine Corps VMFA-235 McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II ""Death Angels"".Beginning in 1966, the US Navy and the Marine Corps launched 522 aircraft of the F-4J series in their particular squadrons alone, whereas this version was equipped with wider tires, a new radar and with stronger General Electric J-79 engines. Via several development stages, the F-4H-1, back then still called the Super Damon, took off on its maiden flight in 1958. Four years later, the name F-4 Phantom-II was officially launched. In 1967, McDonnell merged with the Douglas Corp., and became McDonnell Douglas. Henceforth, it developed successfully in both the civilian and military areas. By 1981, McDonnell Douglas was able to sell well over 5,200 Phantoms to twelve countries.

Showtime 100, VF-96, US Navy McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II. Over 5,000 planes type McDonnell F-4 Phantom II were manufactured from 1958 until 1979. The F-4J “Showtime 100“ gained special fame for its role in one of the most spectacular combat missions of the Vietnam War. On May 10, 1972, the pilot Randy Cunningham took off with his Radar Intercept Officer Willi “Irish” Dirscoll, with this Phantom in the special livery “Showtime 100” to bomb a north-Vietnamese railroad embankment. They indeed managed to shoot down three North-Vietnamese MiG-17 fighters but on their way back to the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, they themselves became victims of an attack. The pilots were able to rescue themselves but the airplane, an F-4J ACE with the registration 155800 flew less than one day in that special livery.

The new item is a 1/200 plastic scale model of the Northrop YB-49, a prototypical heavy bomber conceived soon after WWII. One look at the futuristic design will enable viewers to understand why it’s often referred to as the, Flying Wing. The YB-49 was a radical design, and Warbirds has created a model that is every bit as striking! What’s remarkable about this model is its incredibly lifelike “metallic skin”. The normal method to reproduce such a shiny finish would be to simply add a thin layer of metallic paint to the structure underneath. However, Dragon has adopted an entirely fresh approach for the YB-49 by employing an innovative new technology. In actual fact, the whole underlying raw material of this model is permeated by metallic silver coloring. The model doesn’t have an application of paint on its surfaces - for the entire model is silver -and this has resulted in an even more spectacular layering of shadows and highlights. This shiny model is simply dazzling, with its beauty being far more than just skin deep!

PLA J-20 Stealth Fighter Test Flight Heungtianba Airport Chengdu 2011. China stunned the world on 11 January 2011 with the maiden flight of its first ever stealth fighter, the J-20. The surprising disclosure of this new fifth-generation aircraft signals China’s bid to join the exclusive club of stealth-aircraft operators. The new single-seat fighter flew for 20 minutes after taking off from Heungtianba Airbase in Chengdu, and although its introduction into military service with the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) is still some years off, it’s a milestone for China and its manufacturer Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group. The J-20 is larger and heavier than the American F-22A Raptor, and it uses thrust vector-controlled nozzles (TVC) on its twin jet engines. Its large size allows internal weapons stowage, something essential for a stealth fighter. Even though the J-20 was only recently unveiled, Dragon Warbirds has produced an accurately dimensioned model of this groundbreaking fighter as it appeared during the Chengdu test flight. The highly detailed plastic model is made to 1/144 scale, and it’s authentically painted and carries the requisite PLAAF markings. Detail is crisp and sharply molded, and the length and size of this fighter is most impressive. Detailed landing gear is also included, and it can be exhibited on a modern-looking display stand. This is a stunning model of a stealth fighter that will soon serve in the ranks of a rising superpower. Not only is it Warbirds’ first ever J-20, it’s the very first Chinese subject in the range too!

USAF KC-46A With A F-16C. Aerial refueling aircraft are extremely important force-multiplying assets for any self-respecting military force. They allow fighters and other aircraft to remain aloft for hours on end in order to accomplish far-ranging missions. The mightiest military in the world, the US Air Force (USAF), has many aerial refueling assets. These include KC-135E Stratotankers, aircraft that are now quite aged and in need of replacement. On 24 February 2011, the USAF declared the Boeing KC-767 as the winner of a competition for new aerial refueling aircraft. Based on the Boeing 767-200LRF, this aircraft will be called KC-46A in US service. It features an improved refueling boom taken from the KC-10, and this “NewGen Tanker” also borrows the cockpit display from the Boeing 787. The awarded contract calls for 18 KC-46 planes to be delivered by 2017. Quick off the mark, Dragon Warbirds now brings an exciting 1/400 scale model of Boeing’s NewGen tanker. As would be expected, the model makes use of Warbirds’ existing Boeing 767 molds, but it adds all the requisite parts to make the latest air-to-air refueling craft. As a special bonus for this release, a brand new 1/400 F-16C fighter is also included. Both USAF aircraft can be displayed flying together on a special stand. The KC-46A will be a very important asset in the USAF, just as this model will be in any aircraft collection!

As the war neared its end the Germans were concealing more and more of their important facilities underground in heavily fortified and defended positions with targets such as U-boat pens being protected by thick concrete roofs. As early as 1941 the great engineer Barnes Wallis had begun design on a bomb that would be able to penetrate deep underground and then explode. He called it his ‘Earthquake’ bomb, this later became the prototype of the ‘Tallboy’ bomb. Weighing 12,000lbs, the Tallboys were first used against the Saumur railway tunnel in Western France and went on to prove their effectiveness against U-Boat pens, bunkers and the famous German battleship Tirpitz. This particular machine belonged to 9 Squadron RAF, one of only two squadrons that dropped Tallboys. On the night of the 11th January 1945 this machine helped penetrate 3.5m of concrete above the U-Boat pens at Bergen, destroying the intended target.
