B-1 BOMBER
|
DRW56310
|
USAF B-1B Lancer Test Program. Another exciting rendition of B-1B Lancer is set to join the Dragon Warbirds fleet. The B-1 Lancer bomber is the US Air Force’s only serving variable-sweep wing aircraft. The futuristic design was conceived to create a long-range, low-level, supersonic penetrator bomber that could deliver nuclear weapons. Built by Rockwell, the B-1B Lancer appeared in 1986, and it has since been converted to carry out conventional bomber missions. Today a total of 67 “Bones” (the name is taken from its designation B-One) remain in service with the USAF. The new Dragon Warbirds model depicts an aircraft from the official Lancer Test Program. As such, it is resplendent in a white coat of paint and with the appropriate test program markings, including the colorful livery on the tail. The die-cast metal fuselage has been mated to plastic injection-molded wings and landing gear. Of interest, the variable-sweep wings are set in their forward-most ‘unswept’ position for low-speed flight or takeoff and landing. The lines and details of this white test B-1B Lancer are accurately replicated, and it comes with its own sleek display stand. ONLY 1 LEFT!!

BELL X-1
|
DRW51038

Bell X-1A, First Flight, Edwards AFB (Contain 2 replicas). The famous Bell X-1 was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight. Its development started in 1945, and it was inspired by the shape of a Browning .50-cal machine gun round. The first supersonic test flight occurred on 14 October 1947. A derivative ordered by the US Air Force (USAF) in 1948 was the Bell X-1A, which was an improved design featuring greater fuel capacity and hence a loner engine-burn time. The X-1A looked slightly different with its bubble canopy and longer fuselage, although it was powered by the same Reaction Motors XLR-11 rocket engine. It was intended for research of aerodynamic properties at speeds surpassing Mach 2. The Bell X-1A (with serial number 48-1384) first exceeded Mach 2 in November 1953, but the following month test pilot Captain “Chuck” Yeager achieved a speed record of Mach 2.44. Unfortunately, the experimental plane was later lost in an explosion in August 1955. Joining earlier versions of the Bell X-1, Warbirds now has an excellent 1/144 scale model of the X-1A in its collection. Because of the fundamental differences between the X-1 and X-1A, the new model has received a brand new fuselage. In fact, Item No.51038 offers not one, but two, complete models in this set! The two models are different too - one is a realistic-looking replica, while the other has a novel transparent fuselage that allows a clear view of the aircraft’s innards. Both aircraft can be mounted together in flying mode on a twin metal stand, a configuration that produces a stunning exhibit.

C-130K Hercules C.3, 47 Squadron RAF. For more than 50 years, the American C-130 Hercules has proved an enormous success story for its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin. First produced in 1956, the C-130 is a turboprop-powered tactical transport aircraft able to land on and take off from unprepared airstrips. This aircraft, which has been modified continuously throughout its lifetime, is in service with more than 60 countries. One variant is the C-130K, a version built for export to the United Kingdom. The original C-130K of the Royal Air Force (where it’s known as the Hercules C.1) is the equivalent of the C-130E. However, the British later altered their C.1 aircraft by adding an 80-inch plug in the fuselage to increase its cargo volume by 37%. This stretched C-130K version was known as the C.3. In British service, the C-130K performs countless missions such as troop and cargo transport, medical evacuation and airborne assault. The Warbirds range from Dragon has created an all-new die-cast model of the long-body C-130K serving with the RAF. As the first C-130K in the collection, the model makes use of brand new toolings. Attached to the new fuselage is an aerial refueling probe, a device that extends the original aircraft’s range to more than 4,000 nautical miles. With more than 2,300 aircraft manufactured to date, the C-130 Hercules has the longest ever continuous production run for a military aircraft. And now collectors can have their very own RAF version of this workhorse too!

DRW56274
|
C-5M Super Galaxy, 418th Flight Test Squadron 436th Airlift Wing. The C-5 Galaxy, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is a well-known American military transport aircraft. In production since 1969, the C-5 was designed to carry oversize cargo over intercontinental distances for the US Air Force (USAF). However, technology constantly moves on, and in 1998 work began on modernizing the original C-5 Galaxy. The result was the C-5M Super Galaxy, an aircraft that is to serve on until 2040 and beyond. Key improvements include new engines under the Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program (RERP), and updated avionics under the Avionics Modernization Program (AMP). The latter included new flat-panel displays, improved navigation and communications equipment, and an autopilot. The new power plants are General Electric CF6-80C2 engines with associated auxiliary power units, with these engines producing 22% more thrust than their predecessors. A C-5M is an aircraft that has undergone both these upgrade programs, with the first specimen flying in June 2006. A total of 52 aircraft will be modernized, comprising 49 C-5Bs, two C-5Cs and a solitary C-5A. Dragon Warbirds has produced the original C-5 in model form before, but now comes the C-5M Super Galaxy for the first time. The model depicts a test aircraft that has a special nose containing flight-testing equipment. Detail is finely rendered, and the aircraft is made exactly to the correct scale dimensions. Naturally, the die-cast model features the required new GE engines that were fitted to the C-5M. This aircraft, with more power and greater efficiency, is now airborne in the Warbirds range from Dragon!

USAF KC-46A With A F-16C. Aerial refueling aircraft are extremely important force-multiplying assets for any self-respecting military force. They allow fighters and other aircraft to remain aloft for hours on end in order to accomplish far-ranging missions. The mightiest military in the world, the US Air Force (USAF), has many aerial refueling assets. These include KC-135E Stratotankers, aircraft that are now quite aged and in need of replacement. On 24 February 2011, the USAF declared the Boeing KC-767 as the winner of a competition for new aerial refueling aircraft. Based on the Boeing 767-200LRF, this aircraft will be called KC-46A in US service. It features an improved refueling boom taken from the KC-10, and this “NewGen Tanker” also borrows the cockpit display from the Boeing 787. The awarded contract calls for 18 KC-46 planes to be delivered by 2017. Quick off the mark, Dragon Warbirds now brings an exciting 1/400 scale model of Boeing’s NewGen tanker. As would be expected, the model makes use of Warbirds’ existing Boeing 767 molds, but it adds all the requisite parts to make the latest air-to-air refueling craft. As a special bonus for this release, a brand new 1/400 F-16C fighter is also included. Both USAF aircraft can be displayed flying together on a special stand. The KC-46A will be a very important asset in the USAF, just as this model will be in any aircraft collection!

Apollo 15 ( J-Mission ) Command & Service Module ( CSM ). The fourth American space mission to land on the Moon was Apollo 15, and it was conducted from 26 July to 7 August 1971 after a Saturn V rocket blasted the spacecraft into orbit. NASA described the mission as the “most successful manned flight” up till that point. This was because Apollo 15 was the first of what are described as “J missions”. A “J mission” was one that permitted a longer stay on the Moon’s surface to allow more intensive scientific experimentation and exploration. The Lunar Module (LM) with callsign Falcon stayed three days on the lunar surface and the two astronauts spent a total of 18.5 hours outside their craft over the course of three moonwalks. Apollo 15 also witnessed the first use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, its top speed of 12km/h allowing the crew to foray much further afield from their LM. Simultaneously, the Command/Service Module (CSM) named Endeavour took a number of readings and photographs as it circled the Moon while awaiting the return of the LM. The latest addition to Dragon’s immensely popular Space Collection is a 1/72 model of the Apollo 15 CSM performing its space mission. The spacecraft has brand new parts, and it’s delivered fully finished and pre-painted so as to be ready for immediate display. A notable visual feature of the model is the distinctive antennas. As well as the steerable S-band high-gain (deep space) antenna for communications with Earth, there is a long HF dipole center-feed antenna. On the original craft, this retractable antenna measured some 80 feet in length. The Yagi seven-element antenna used for VHF communications is also mounted on the CSM. This Apollo 15 model performing its very first “J Mission” will add something special to any collection! ONLT 1 LEFT!!

Apollo 16 (Lunar Highlands Exploration) CSM, LM, Lunar Rover, & Astronauts. NASA’s Apollo space program successfully placed man on the Moon, but even after this milestone had been achieved, a number of other missions followed. One was Apollo 16, which was the fifth flight to land man on the Moon. However, this scientific mission stands out as the first to touch down in a highlands area, namely the Descartes Highlands. Apollo 16 blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center on 16 April 1972 and landed on the Moon five days later. The Lunar Module (LM) christened Orion contained the program’s second Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), which enabled astronauts to explore further afield. During the Apollo 16 mission, LRV-002 covered a total distance of 26.55km, although it never strayed more than 4.5km from the LM because the crew needed to be able to walk back to their spacecraft in case of a breakdown! Astronaut set the speed record for a vehicle driving on the Moon – 18km/h – a record that has stood the test of time! The astronauts collected 94.7kg of lunar samples whilst conducting scientific experiments. Eventually the lunar ascent module docked with the orbiting Command/Service Module (CSM) named Casper before heading home. Dragon’s Space Collection is proud to offer a full set representing the important Apollo 16 mission. For the first time ever, a miniature Lunar Rover is included in the series. The vehicle is accurately made to 1/72 scale, and it is beautifully detailed and painted. The LRV is made even more eye-catching by the fact that an astronaut is seated behind the wheel as he explores the lunar surface. The inclusion of the CSM, LM and an additional astronaut on the Moon makes for an amazing diorama setting. It’s incredible that so much can fit inside a single box, but each item has been carefully molded and correctly painted. Now collectors can explore this fine high-flying 1/72 scale set depicting the Apollo 16 mission!

1:400 Scale Titan IIIC w/Launch Pad. The Titan family of expendable rockets was extremely successful, with a total of 368 rockets launched between 1959 and 2005. One of the rockets from this family was the Titan IIIC, this being a space booster used for US Air Force (USAF) missions. This rocket built by Martin Marietta first flew on 18 June 1965, and its final flight was in 1982. The Titan IIIC was indispensable in launching large payloads into space, serving as the largest unmanned space booster until the Titan IV entered service in 1988. A 13.1-tonne payload could be sent into a low-earth orbit, or 3 tonnes could be sent into a geosynchronous transfer orbit. One of the Titan IIIC’s strengths was its flexibility, for it could utilize no upper stage, or one of two optional stages. This meant the 42m-long rocket could carry a variety of payloads depending on the mission. ONLY 1 LEFT!!

1/400 Delta II, 7920 The USA planned to phase out all expendable launch vehicles (ELV) after the Space Shuttle entered service. However, the Challenger accident of 1986 changed all that, and the Delta program was restarted. Termed Delta II, these rockets have made nearly 150 successful launches since 1989, making it the most reliable system in service. Originally built by McDonnell Douglas, production for both US government and commercial entities is now the responsibility of United Launch Alliance (ULA). As an ELV, each rocket can only be launched once. A Delta II rocket consists of Stage I tanks, solid rocket boosters, interstage, Stage II tanks, optional Stage III rocket motor, and finally the payload fairing (nose cone). Among the Delta II’s missions are the launching of GPS Block II satellites, Iridium satellites, and several Mars missions for NASA. The latter includes the Mars Phoenix lander in 2007. The future of the Delta II space rocket is uncertain beyond 2011 once the Medium Launch Vehicle 3 contract with the US Air Force expires, but despite this it has proved a hugely successful design to date. 1 left!!

A2 Soyuz TMA-3 Rocket. Along with the USA and China, Russia continues to invest heavily in space programs via the Russian Federal Space Agency. Indeed, it regularly launches flights to service the International Space Station (ISS) that orbits the Earth at an average altitude of 370km. Dragon’s newest model in its exciting Space Collection represents one of the Soyuz family of rockets used by Russia. Specifically it’s Soyuz TMA-3, the third flight of the TMA type. With three international astronauts (a Russian, American and Spaniard) aboard, the spacecraft blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on 18 October 2003. It coupled with the Docking Module/Compartment Pirs of the ISS on two days later before safely returning to Earth on 29 April 2004. Soyuz TMA-3 had been in orbit for 195 days. Designed for the operational parameters of the ISS, the Soyuz-FG is the only vehicle that Russia has used to send missions to the Space Station since late 2002. Dragon’s fully built-up and pre-painted Space Collection model is manufactured precisely to 1/400 scale, which allows full detail to be incorporated without making it overly cumbersome in size. With American, Japanese and European rockets already featuring in the Dragon Space Collection, it was essential that Russia also be represented. Thus the new A2 Soyuz TMA-3 stems from entirely new molds. With the manned spacecraft mounted on its Soyuz-FG launch vehicle, the rocket’s appearance is quite different to Western systems. With its good looks and precision molding, it will definitely be soaring into numerous model collections worldwide, ONLY 2 LEFT!!

Delta II Rocket (7925 Heavy) w/Launch Pad. The USA planned to phase out all expendable launch vehicles (ELV) after the Space Shuttle entered service. Termed Delta II, these rockets have made nearly 150 successful launches since 1989, making it the most reliable system in service. As an ELV, each rocket can only be launched once. Among the Delta II’s missions are launching GPS Block II satellites, Iridium satellites, and several Mars missions for NASA. Delta rockets, including the 7000 series that includes both (Light’ and “Heavy) variants, are given a four-digit code depending on their exact configuration. For example, a (Delta II 7925 Heavy) refers to a vehicle that has an RS-27A-engined first stage, nine graphite-epoxy motor (GEM) boosters, a second stage powered by an Aerojet AJ10 engine, and a Payload Assistance Module (PAM) third stage. The “Heavy” designation refers to the fact that the system employs the larger GEM-46 boosters that were originally intended for the Delta III. Dragon Space series has launched a fine model of such a Delta II 7925 Heavy rocket. Made to 1/400 scale, it accurately replicates this common launch configuration. The model is sharply molded and finished in the correct colors. The model also comes with its associated launch platform, creating an instant miniature scene that will impress viewers.

The model is highly accurate and is fully detailed. It’s pre-painted and carries the correct series of USAF markings. It features the two huge strap-on solid rocket boosters that propelled Titan IIIC on its first ever foray into space from Cape Canaveral. Interestingly, Titan IIIC was distinguished by being the first to use solid-rocket motors to boost performance of the liquid-fueled core vehicle. Furthermore, the scale model comes with its own launch pad, thus creating an instant and dramatic diorama.

Titan IIIE w/Launch Pad. The Titan family of expendable rockets was extremely successful, with 368 rockets launched between 1959 and 2005. The 48m-long Titan IIIE, sometimes referred to as the Titan III-Centaur, was used seven times. The name Centaur stemmed from the fact that a Centaur-D upper stage was added to boost the system’s performance. This three-stage rocket was instrumental in launching NASA’s two Voyager probes to Jupiter and Saturn, as well as the two Viking missions. The latter put instrumented landers on the surface of Mars. The Titan IIIE was used from 1974-77, with all missions blasting off from Cape Canaveral. Dragon's 1/400 scale model shows an impressive Titan IIIE rocket positioned on its launch pad awaiting blastoff. The pre-painted model is highly accurate and is fully detailed, including the correct markings. It comes with its special high-specific-impulse Centaur upper stage, a totally new part, which gives it a completely different appearance to the Titan IIIC released previously. The model also features two huge strap-on solid rocket boosters. For folk who wish to become more familiar with the Titan family of rockets, this is a must-have item!

Space Shuttle (Discovery) w/Crawler Transporter. Dragon's space models are getting more and more exciting for modelers. This is demonstrated by the newest 1/400 scale item – the Space Shuttle Discovery mounted on a massive Crawler-Transporter. The idea behind this enormous vehicle was to transfer space rockets and Space Shuttles from NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to the launch complex at the Kennedy Space Center, a distance of some 5.6km. Two such vehicles were produced, and they were the world’s largest tracked vehicles when built. The Transporter-Crawler measures 40m long, 35m wide and 7.9m high. Its weight comes in at a staggering 2,721 tonnes! Space vehicles are carried aboard the Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP). With a maximum velocity of 1.6km/h and driving team of nearly 30 people. Built to 1/400 scale, the entire assembly of the Shuttle Discovery (with attached External Tank and two Solid Rocket Boosters) plus the MLP and Tractor-Crawler are produced in minute detail. Fine details such as the track links on the four tractors are all perfectly replicated. Even areas that are hidden (e.g. the inside surface of the MLP) are all fully furnished and painted. Discovery had the honor of conducting more flights than any other Shuttle – 39 missions spread over 27 years – and this astonishing Space Collection model from Dragon Wings is the perfect way to commemorate its accomplishments.

CZ-2F-T1 Rocket (Chang Zheng2F), TianGong-1, Chinese Manned Orbital Carrier Rocket. China is one of the newest entrants in the space race, with ambitious plans to establish a space station by 2020 and to be the third country to put man on the Moon by 2025. The manned orbital carrier rocket that China is currently relying upon for its space program is the Long March family. Indeed, one of these members, the Long March 2F (or CZ-2F), was the first rocket to put a Chinese taikonaut in space. The CZ-2F is a man-rated two-stage design, and it’s a development of the Long March 2E with structural modifications to allow carriage of heavier Shenzhou capsules (its maximum payload is 8,400kg). It also has more redundant systems to enhance safety. More recently, a CZ-2F rocket launched the Tiangong 1 (the name translates as “heavenly palace”) space laboratory module into low earth orbit on 29 September 2011. CZ-2F-T1 blasted off from the South Launch Site of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre. Later, an unmanned Shenzhou spacecraft twice rendezvoused and docked with Tiangong 1 in early November, an important step in China’s aim to establish a fully functioning space station. This space lab will deorbit in 2013, to be replaced by newer modules. Dragon Space Collection allows modelers to celebrate this historic milestone in China’s technological march through a brand new 1/400 scale model of the rocket system. This rocket represents Chinese technological prowess and the nation’s space aspirations, and the CZ-2F-T1, which is a completely new tooling, does the subject justice. Dragon has released many notable 1/400 scale models of systems such as the Atlas, Titan, Delta, H-IIA and Ariane, and now the Chinese type is proudly represented too. By acquiring this Chinese CZ-2F-T1, collectors will be able to field a very international range of space rockets.

Dragon Lady, 9RW, USAF U-2R. Despite its advancing age, the U-2 “Dragon Lady” continues to fly high-altitude all-weather reconnaissance missions for the US Air Force (USAF) even today. Built by Lockheed, the U-2 is powered by a single engine, and its high-aspect-ratio wings and light construction resemble that of a glider. While its particular planform is required by the high altitudes at which the aircraft flies, this also makes it very difficult to operate. Indeed, the U-2 has to be flown at near maximum speed to avert stalling. Landing is a particularly hazardous undertaking as it uses bicycle-type landing gear and titanium skids on its wingtips. It can fly at altitudes of 21,000m, requiring the pilot to wear the equivalent of a spacesuit. The U-2R (initially known as the TR-1A) is a modified U-2C featuring larger under-wing “superpods” and increased fuel capacity. The type first flew in 1967, and the final example was delivered to the USAF in October 1989. It is powered by a Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet engine, and a total of twelve U-2R Dragon Ladies were built. Various surveillance and intelligence-gathering sensors are carried onboard. This specific variant of the Dragon Lady is the subject of Warbirds’ new 1/144 scale die-cast model. It’s exciting as it’s a brand new design made from completely new toolings. The long, slim fuselage and outspread wings are accurately reproduced. Panel lines are finely engraved on it. With a wingspan of more than 210mm in this scale, this is a truly impressive model. To enable it to be presented to best advantage, it comes with a sleek metal display stand. This high-altitude recon aircraft is rarely seen, but collectors can now get their very own U-2R at desktop level!

DRAGON ARMOUR 88MM FLAK 36
|
DRR60630
|
88mm FlaK 36, Stalingrad 1942. The newest 1/72 Dragon Armor is an amazing replica of a German 8.8cm Flak 36 gun, and naturally it’s been newly tooled. Originally an antiaircraft weapon, the “88” was one of the most famous weapons of WWII, and several variants were produced. One of them was the Flugzeugabwehrkanone (Flak) 36, which was in its element when serving as an anti-tank cannon. The 7.4-tonne gun could be readied for action in just 2.5 minutes. Muzzle velocity was 820m/ and it was particularly deadly against enemy tanks. Entering service in 1936/37, it was commonly fitted with a shield to protect crewmembers when engaging ground targets. Dragon Armor’s first depiction of the Flak 36 shows a weapon in action during the bloody Battle of Stalingrad in 1942, a conflagration that culminated in a massive defeat for German forces. The gun on its cruciform platform is painted in a typical early-war camouflage scheme of gray. This particular weapon has had a stunning career as illustrated by the number of kill marks chalked on the armored shield. This was a legendary weapon of WWII, and Dragon’s model is accomplished in both its level of detail and finish.

The latest Dragon Armor new item is a 1/72 scale replica of a German 8.8cm Flak 36 gun. The famous weapon is finished in camouflage suitable for North Africa. Originally an antiaircraft weapon, the “88” was one of the most famous weapons of WWII. One variant was the Flugzeugabwehrkanone (Flak) 36, which was in its element when serving as an anti-tank cannon. It had a two-piece barrel for easier replacement, and a heavier Sd.Anh.202 carriage that meant it could fire without being emplaced if necessary. The 7.4-tonne gun could be readied for action in just 2.5 minutes. Muzzle velocity was 820m/ and it was particularly deadly against enemy tanks, especially in the type of long-range encounters that occurred in North Africa. Dragon Armor’s newest depiction of the Flak 36 shows a weapon in service with the 10th Panzer Division in Tunisia, 1943. This division had been rushed to North Africa in late 1942 after the Allied landings under Operation Torch. The division had some successes against ‘green’ US Army units, including the Battle of Kasserine Pass in 1943. The gun on its cruciform platform is painted in a typical sand and green camouflage scheme. Of interest is the barrel that’s still painted in a panzer gray color. This was a legendary weapon of WWII, and Dragon’s model is accomplished in both its level of detail and desert finish.

DRAGON ARMOUR AMPHIBIOUS TANKS
|
DRR60583
|
IJN Type 2, Ka-Mi, Amphibious Tank (Combat Version), The 5th Naval Ground Base Guard (II), Saipan June 1944. Dragon earlier produced a simply stunning 1/35 scale Smart Kit of the Japanese Type 2 “Ka-Mi” amphibious tank, and now the company has used it as a platform to create a 1/72 Dragon Armor version. The Type 2 was the first amphibious tank used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). It was designed for Japanese landing forces performing amphibious invasions of Pacific islands that didn’t have regular port facilities. Production commenced in 1942 and a total of 184 Type 2 amphibious tanks were made, although the design was really too late to participate in Japan’s island-hopping campaign. When used in water, large pontoons were attached to the glacis plate and rear deck to give it a top speed of 10km/h. These pontoons could be shed as soon as it reached land. The turret featured a 3.7cm Type 1 gun and coaxial Type 97 machine gun. Dragon Armor’s 1/72 scale model is extremely accurate, as it’s based on measurements taken from a surviving tank on Peleliu (present-day Palau). The tank is shown without its flotation pontoons, and it represents a vehicle from the 5th Naval Base Ground Guard (II). This unit was based in Saipan in the Mariana Islands, and it was heavily involved in the pivotal fighting there from 15 June-9 July 1944. Although it’s a very small model, it’s rich with detail. The vehicle’s period “battleship gray” color tone is authentically reproduced, as are the eye-catching IJN flags painted on the turret. This is a swimmingly good miniature of a fascinating subject!

Churchill Mk.IV, 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards, France 1944. The Churchill, referred to officially as the Tank, Infantry, Mk IV (A22), was named after the British prime minister at the time of its design in WWII. The tank was heavily armored and it featured a long chassis with long track runs that enabled it to cross difficult terrain. The first Churchills were hastily churning off Vauxhall production lines in June 1941, within a year of the tank’s design in the aftermath of the humiliating Allied defeat in Europe. Various improvements occurred, with the Churchill Mk IV variant featuring a cast turret instead of the all-welded turret found on the visually similar Mk III. Its main armament was a QF 6 pounder gun. Weighing in at approximately 40 tonnes, the Churchill had a particularly slow top speed. The Mk IV was the most numerically common model of the Churchill, with 1,622 tanks produced.

DRAGON ARMOUR FLAKPANZER V
|
DRR60525
|
Flakpanzer V ""Coelian"" German 1945 - Ultimate Armor. Germany’s Luftwaffe was numerically outnumbered as WWII progressed, with the Fatherland and tactical units constantly being bombed and strafed by enemy aircraft. This called for more effective antiaircraft systems than Germany hitherto possessed, which initially were often poorly protected halftracks. New self-propelled AA types were put into service, including the Flakpanzer IV. A new type was also planned – the Flakpanzer V “Coelian” from Rheinmetall. The Coelian featured a special armored turret that would protect the crew inside the vehicle. It used a standard Panther tank chassis upon which were mounted twin 3.7cm FlaK 43 cannons. What sets this Dragon Armor item apart from the previous release of the Flakpanzer V “Coelian” is its painting. Instead of an overall coat of sand yellow paint, this 1/72 scale model is finished in a late-war three-color scheme. This fine model features the correct dual antiaircraft guns mounted based on a Panther chassis, and the fully enclosed turret is a new molding. It carefully replicates the prototypical turret structure that never actually got to see combat. This turret and associated gun system are made true to scale. While this system never had the requisite time to get off the drawing board, Dragon’s engineers are proud to bring this second exciting model to collectors’ display cabinets!

Germany’s Luftwaffe was numerically outnumbered as WWII progressed, with the Fatherland and tactical units constantly being bombed and strafed by enemy aircraft. The model is finished in a dark yellow painting scheme. Zwilling Flakpanzer German 1945. The Luftwaffe was numerically outnumbered as WWII progressed, with the Fatherland and tactical units constantly being bombed and strafed by enemy aircraft. This called for more effective antiaircraft systems than Germany hitherto possessed. A new vehicle was planned – the 5.5cm Zwilling Flakpanzer V – though like the Flakpanzer V “Coelian”, it was never put into production. Development of the twin-barrel 5.5cm Zwilling was authorized on 8 May 1944 and it featured a special Krupp armored turret weighing 9.06 tonnes mounted on a Panther Ausf.G chassis. The antiaircraft vehicle would require a four-man crew and carry 104 ammo rounds. A wooden prototype turret was completed by January 1945, although further development of the 5.5cm Zwilling Flakpanzer V was eventually cancelled on 14 February.

Flakpanzer 341 mit 2cm Flakvierling, Germany 1945. At the start of WWII, the Luftwaffe ruled the skies, but this dominance was gradually overturned as the war progressed. This led to a dire need for more antiaircraft vehicles for ground forces, and early efforts at producing a Flakpanzer centered on the Panzer IV chassis. However, the famous German Panther medium tank was also used as a platform for developmental work, with the Coelian perhaps being the best-known example. In May 1943, a proposed Rheinmetall design showed two pairs of Vierling MG151/20 antiaircraft cannons mounted in a Turm Panther II. This turret was heavily armored and it featured the pairs of cannons offset from each other and mounted at different heights. This early Flakpanzer design never advanced much further…except in terms of Dragon Armor’s superb new 1/72 scale model that shows it in fully finished form and with an intriguing camouflage scheme!

Now, this fantastic vehicle line offers something else of unique interest to collectors – an Sd.Kfz.251 halftrack pulling the same small anti-tank weapon. The Sd.Kfz.251/1 Schützenpanzerwagen armed with a 7.92mm machine gun was designed to transport panzer-grenadiers into battle, and more than 15,000 examples of all different variants were produced during WWII. This item depicts an Ausf.C type, which appeared in mid-1940. Production of the Ausf.C featured a simplified forward engine armored plate, although its many angled plates still made it difficult to manufacture efficiently. This 1/72 scale model features a halftrack combination from the famous “Großdeutschland” Division, an elite unit of the Wehrmacht supplied with the best equipment. In 1942 it became a motorized infantry division, supporting the fatal assault on Stalingrad and becoming a mobile reserve on the north bank of the Donets River. It’s from this period that this Dragon Armor item emanates. The Sd.Kfz.251/1 Ausf.C and PaK 35/36 are finished in a typical early-war panzer gray paint scheme. The halftrack possesses the recognizable German helmet marking of the division, as well as additional tactical markings. Here Dragon Armor has come up with an inspirational model for the enjoyment of WWII military vehicle collectors! ONLY 1 LEFT!!1

1/72 Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.C + 3.7cm PaK 35/36 Pz. Gren. Rgt 12. 4.Pz. Division, Kurland 1944. Dragon Armor released a 1/72 scale model of an Sd.Kfz.251/1 Schützenpanzerwagen towing a 3.7cm PaK 35/36 anti-tank gun earlier. Now this fantastic combination is being reoffered, but this time the model portrays a different unit. Armed with a 7.92mm machine gun, the Sd.Kfz.251/1 transported and supported German panzer-grenadiers in battle. More than 15,000 examples of the Sd.Kfz.251 halftrack were produced during WWII, and this Dragon Armor item depicts an Ausf.C type, which appeared in mid-1940. Production of the Ausf.C featured a simplified forward engine armored plate, although its many angled plates still made it difficult to manufacture efficiently. This 1/72 scale model features a halftrack and anti-tank cannon combination from Panzergrenadier-Regiment 12 of 4. Panzer-Division. The 4th Panzer Division fought on the Eastern Front before being trapped as part of Heeresgruppe Nord at Kurland on the Latvian coast in late 1944. The Sd.Kfz.251/1 Ausf.C is finished in an attractive three-color camouflage scheme while the PaK 35/36 wears a plain sand yellow coat. It is interesting that this weak 3.7cm anti-tank gun was still being used at this late point of the war, and perhaps reflects those desperate days. With this release, Dragon Armor has come up with yet another inspirational military combination!

DRAGON ARMOUR IJA TYPE 95 & 97

DRR60435
|
IJA Type 97 ""Chi-Ha"" Late Production, 14th Independent Tank Company, Jeju-do 1945. The Type 97 Chi-Ha medium tank that Dragon Armor previously released was a very popular item. An extra version of this 1/72 scale tank is being added to the collection’s Japanese tank fleet in the form of a Late-Production variant. The Type 97 was Japan’s most widely produced medium tank of WWII. Boasting a short-barreled 57mm main gun and two Type 97 machine guns, this tank was intended to serve as an up-scaled version of the Type 95 for infantry support. Armor protection was modest on this vehicle. A total of 2,123 tanks were produced from 1938-43, although 930 of these were of the improved version featuring a higher-velocity 47mm gun. The tank could move at a speed of 38km/h. The Chi-Ha was used in combat in Manchuria and China, as well as fighting against the Allies. The new Dragon Armor model portrays a vehicle belonging to the 14th Independent Tank Company of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA). This unit was hastily formed right at the end of WWII in response to fears of an invasion from the north by the Soviet Red Army. The 1/72 scale model depicts a tank deployed on Jeju Island (part of present-day South Korea) south of the Korean peninsular. The Late-Production Chi-Ha sports a two-color camouflage scheme plus unique lightning bolt markings on the turret. Japanese tanks of WWII don’t gain the attention that German ones usually do, so this model allows collectors to get further acquainted with a very important Japanese tank design

Sd.Kfz.182 Kingtiger Henschel Turret, Berlin 1945. Weighing 68 tons, Germany’s Kingtiger tank entered combat service in mid-1944. It was an impressive vehicle, and being the final tank design to enter production during WWII, it could be seen as the pinnacle of German tank design. The most common version had the angular Henschel turret that eliminated the frontal shot trap of the original Porsche turret. The Kingtiger was armed with an 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun and its frontal armor was up to 180mm thick. This formidable fighting machine was embroiled in the final Battle of Berlin, a conflict that raged from 20 April to 2 May 1945. Soviet units remorselessly pummeled the German capital to finally bring the war in Europe to an end. A handful of Kingtigers were involved in this final battle. Every one of them was lost defending the crumbling heart of the Third Reich. Dragon Armor has launched a fantastic 1/72 scale model of a Tiger II fighting in the Battle of Berlin. The model is a Henschel Production version with the appropriate turret. The late-war “ambush” camouflage scheme features red-brown and sand-yellow colors, and it is accurately painted in miniature. In keeping with its late-war use, this model Kingtiger is devoid of any tactical markings. This model Kingtiger, backed into a corner in the final act of war in Europe, is a masterpiece of detail and painting.

LVT-A1, 708th Amphibious Tank Battalion, Ryukyus 1945. The first Landing Vehicles Tracked (LVT) were produced by the Food Machinery Corporation (FMC) for the US military. By the end of WWII a total of 18,621 LVTs had been manufactured. The LVT-(A)1 was employed as a fire support vehicle. It featured an M3 Stuart turret containing a 37mm M6 gun. It also bristled with five .30-cal machine guns. A total of 510 LVT(A)-1 vehicles were eventually produced. It could achieve speeds of 12km/h in water, and the vehicle weighed 13,180kg. This important amtrac was used in such battles as Saipan, Guam, Tinian and Peleliu during the bloody Pacific campaign. Dragon has already successfully recreated the LVT(A)-1 in 1/72 scale as a plastic kit. This highly accurate kit forms the basis for Dragon Armor’s new fully built-up version of this vehicle. The miniature model boasts a complicated suspension system, as well as a well-detailed deck upon which even the weld seams are visible. The turret is also well constructed, and it boasts a hollowed-out gun muzzle. Painted in realistic colors and with a suitable amount of weathering, this LVT(A)-1 comes in the markings of the 708th Amphibious Tank Battalion. It represents an actual vehicle that participated in the capture of the Ryukyu Islands in 1945. This is a fine replica of an interesting American amphibious fire support vehicle, and it constitutes a welcome addition to the Dragon Armor collection.

DRAGON ARMOUR NEUBAU-FAHRZEUG

Neubau-Fahrzeug Nr.2, Versuchsfahrzeuge, Germany 1935. German’s first attempts at creating a heavy tank commenced in the early 1930s. Known as the Neubau-Fahrzeug (“New Construction Vehicle”), it was not a success, however. Slow-moving and boasting multiple turrets, it was ill equipped for the type of rapid, mobile warfare that blitzkrieg tactics required. For this reason, only five Neubau-Fahrzeug heavy tanks were built by Rheinmetall-Borsig (Rh-B). The first two prototypes (numbers 1-2) were manufactured in 1934 out of mild steel so they were not suitable for combat. The design featured a 3.7cm KwK L/45 cannon and a 7.5cm KwK L/24 main gun. The three 25.8-ton armored tanks (numbers 3-5) built in 1935 participated in the 1940 invasion of Norway. Dragon Armor is offering a 1/72 scale model of the second Neubau-Fahrzeug prototype. This Neubau-Fahrzeug Nr.2 is impressive in its rare camouflage colors of green, brown and sand, perhaps a portent of the schemes that would later appear during WWII. As a prototype, the model does not bear any tactical markings, although it was used at a training school until 1940. The turrets are precisely replicated, and they are notably different to those mounted on the three production tanks. This was one monster of a tank, and now modelers can own one bedecked in eye-catching colors!

Neubau-Fahrzeug Nr.3-5 Pz.Abt.z.b.V.40, Norway 1940. Germany created many successful medium and heavy tanks such as the Panzer III, Panzer IV, Panther and Tiger. However, the nation’s first attempts at creating a heavy tank commenced in the early 1930s. Known as the Neubaufahrzeug (New Construction Vehicle), it was not a success, however. Slow-moving and boasting multiple turrets, it was ill equipped for the type of rapid, mobile warfare that Blitzkrieg tactics required. For this reason, only five Neubaufahrzeug heavy tanks were built. Their armament included a 7.5m KwK L/24 main gun, 3.7cm KwK L/45 cannon and two 7.92mm machine guns. The three 25.8-ton series-production tanks (numbers 3-5) that had been built in 1935-36 participated in the 1940 invasion of Norway within a specially formed Panzerabteilung called Pz.Abt.z.b.V.40.Dragon Armor is offering a 1/72 scale model of one of those tanks that saw action in Norway. Utilizing research and molds from the previously released plastic kit, this Neubaufahrzeug is impressive in its early-war camouflage colors of gray and brown. The model has also received white balkenkreuze markings as well as a distinctive elefant on the hull front. The three turrets are precisely replicated. This was one monster of a tank, and now modelers can own one with a Scandinavian flavor!

Flakpanzer 341 mit 2cm Flakvierling, Nuremberg 1945. Flakpanzer 341 mit 2cm Flakvierling, Nuremberg 1945.

This Neubau-Fahrzeug Nr.2 is impressive in its camouflage colors of panzer gray and brown, and its appearance thus differs considerably from the previous one. 1/72 Sd. Kfz.222 Leichte Panzerspähwagen, Poland 1939. To support its mobile concept of modern warfare, Germany introduced a wide range of tracked and wheeled armored vehicles. One wheeled family of vehicles introduced in 1936 included 4x4 armored cars known as the Leichter Panzerspähwagen, which translates as “Light Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle.” Powered by a Horch engine, these vehicles were based on a Horch 801 heavy car chassis to which an armored body was added. It was armed with a 2cm KwK.30 L/55 cannon and MG34 machine gun in an open-topped turret. A crew of three operated the Sd.Kfz.222. In early-war campaigns such as the invasion of Poland it performed well as a reconnaissance vehicle for panzer divisions. Following the initial success of a 1/72 scale Sd.Kfz.222 model, Dragon Armor is now introducing a second vehicle. As before, the model has a superb level of detail. But this time it bears markings such as white crosses that were worn by vehicles fighting in Poland in 1939. Dragon Armor’s fully assembled Sd.Kfz.222 possesses all the detail expected of such a model. For example, the mesh screen covering the open-topped turret resorts to a photo-etched part to ensure it’s true to scale. The gun muzzle, too, is realistically hollowed out. The vehicle is finished in an accurate shade of ‘panzer gray’ camouflage paint from an unidentified unit in the Polish campaign.

1/72 Kfz.70 6x4 Personnel Carrier w/3.7cm PaK 35/36, Eastern Front 1943. The Kfz.70 6x4 Truck served throughout WWII after mass production commenced in 1933. Some 7,000 trucks were produced up till 1942 and the vehicle was powered by an air-cooled 3.308-liter flat-four engine. The horizontal engine gave rise to the truck’s distinctive, sharply sloped nose, and also to its nickname “Boxer”. The truck was used for all kinds of purposes, and it was commonly employed for towing light artillery such as the 3.7cm Pak 35/36 antitank cannon. Now Dragon Armor is getting in on the action with a new fully built-up model in a personnel carrier configuration, in which state it was known in German nomenclature as the Kfz.70. The truck is finished in a typical early-war panzer gray paint scheme. The wheels and independent coil spring suspension are masterfully represented, as is the raking hood. To add to the items’ appeal and value, the truck comes towing a 3.7cm PaK 36/37 antitank cannon as well. The model also bears an appropriate amount of weathering. This 6x4 truck was a workhorse of the German military during WWII, and Dragon Armor has come up with an equally robust model for the enjoyment of military vehicle collectors, ONLY 1 LEFT!!

The StuH.42 featured an electrically fired 10.5cm leFH 18 howitzer fitted in the superstructure instead of the more usual anti-tank cannon. A total of 1,211 StuH.42 vehicles were produced from October 1942 till the end of the war. These vehicles were issued to Sturmgeschütz brigades to support regular StuG.IIIs. One unit to operate the StuH.42 on the Eastern Front was the 8th Cavalry Division “Florian Geyer”. It fought on the Eastern Front before being eventually destroyed in Budapest in 1945. One vehicle from this unit fighting in the winter of 1944 has been superbly recreated in miniature by Dragon Armor. It wears a neat coat of whitewash over its sand-colored basecoat. The only visible tactical markings are Balkankreuz on the superstructure sides. The 1/72 scale model has been masterfully finished, and the StuH.42 Ausf.G self-propelled howitzer will blend in well with a snowy environment…or alternatively stand out in a model collection!

1/72 T-34/85 Chinese Volunteer Army, Korea 1950 - Korean War 60th Anniversary Limited Edition, China entered the Korean War on October 19, 1950, and Chinese forces did not completely withdraw until 1958. To avoid any official war with the USA, Chinese soldiers fought under the auspices of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army (PVA), even though they were all members of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The initial assault by 270,000 PVA troops on October 25, 1950 caught the UN completely by surprise. One of the armored vehicles that China deployed during the Korean War was the Soviet-designed T-34/85 tank. Indeed, it was the most powerful armored vehicle the communist side fielded during this brutal conflict. Last year, on the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, Dragon Armor released two 1/72 scale models. These were highly accurate replica M4A3E8(76W) Sherman tanks from the US side of the Korean War. Now, Dragon Armor has released a tank from the opposing side. This fully built-up T-34/85 bears authentic markings of the PVA. While Dragon Armor has released versions of the T-34/85 before, up till now they have all been in Soviet markings. This latest tank is thus all the more exceptional with its Chinese ownership and tactical markings. With full detail replicated in miniature, and with an amazingly well-crafted paint finish and weathering effects, this impressive T-34/85 is ready to take on its UN foes on the troubled Korean Peninsular!

Tiger I Late Production s.Pz.Abt.510, December 1944. Perhaps the most famous of all German tanks of WWII was the formidable Tiger I. With a reputation as fierce as its name suggests, this heavy tank introduced into service in August 1942 stalked and destroyed enemy armored vehicles across numerous battlefields in the latter half of the war. Despite its fame, a surprisingly small total of just 1,347 Tiger I tanks was built up till August 1944. The Tiger I was the first German tank to mount the deadly 8.8cm KwK 36 cannon, and boasting armor that was 120mm thick in places, it weighed in at a massive 62.7 tons. This combination of firepower and armor protection resulted in a creditable ratio of 5.74 enemy tank kills to each Tiger loss. Dragon Armor’s newest 1/72 scale model (Item No.60544) depicts one of these mighty Tiger I tanks, in this case a Late-Production version. It is presented in the markings of s.Pz.Abt.510, a unit formed in June 1944. After being equipped with its complement of Tiger Is, s.Pz.Abt.510 was sent to the Eastern Front. It fought in East Prussia and Kurland until the end of the war. The unit’s distinctive standing bear marking inside a shield is applied to the front of the hull. This exciting Dragon Armor item has a readymade Zimmerit coating applied with a master’s touch to give a fine scale appearance. It is also adorned in a typical three-color camouflage scheme. Armor model lovers won’t “bear” to be without this Tiger I in their collections!

DRAGON ARMOUR VK.45.02(P)

VK.45.02(P)V, Germany 1945. Dr. Porsche was an important figure in terms of German armored fighting vehicle development during WWII. Unfortunately, not all his ideas met with success, with the VK4501(P) being a prime example. After its failure, he nevertheless designed an updated version known as the VK.45.02(P). He actually proposed five different versions, with four different types of engine and both forward- and rear-mounted turrets. The heavy tank turret was designed by Krupp to mount an 8.8cm KwK43 L/71 gun, and it featured a rounded front for better ballistic qualities. Production of the VK.45.02(P) was authorized in April 1942 and 200 vehicles were to be produced. Again, however, Dr. Porsche was stymied by a too ambitious automotive design, as the tank’s 10-cylinder engine was unproven and complicated. In November 1942 the whole contract was rescinded and the 57-ton VK.45.02(P) was consigned to the fate of being another ‘paper panzer’!

Dragon Armor is going to release a mightily impressive 1/72 scale VK.45.02(P)H prototype. It has the Porsche turret, which was later assigned to the Tiger II, mounted well to the rear of the hull to produce a most unique profile. The model is finished in a typical late-war camouflage scheme of two colors, this being punctuated by the barest of extra markings in the form of Balkenkreuz. The VK.45.02(P) is beautifully painted and weathered, and the detail on the heavy tank prototype is very complete. This Porsche prototype offers collectors something new and different to add to their panzer forces.
